The Dreamscapes of Mary Zarbano
Chemers Gallery has long carried works by noted artist Mary Zarbano. We now have several exciting new paintings, both on paper and on canvas, as well as a delightful series of paper mache vases and sculptures. Mary is very spiritual, and is heavily influenced by her dreams. She often features feminine figures in her paintings, alone and in pairs. She explores themes of sisterhood and familial relationships. Mother and Child visually explores the interconnection of parent and offspring, highlighting the gaze between them. Her flat, almost misty backgrounds draw you into Mary's dream-like worlds. Her paintings are deeply personal and introspective, and cause you to consider the significance of your own dreams.
Purple Seated Bird Lady is a wonderful small-scale sculpture, measuring only six inches tall. She appears bound by her bright floral dress, with three small black bird friends. Although she is confined, she doesn't look unhappy. Instead, she has a small Mona Lisa-like smile on her serene face. Although Mary didn't consciously intend for the birds to have any significance, there are some who attribute bird forms to the soul, while others suggest that birds are symbols of motherhood.
Mary attributes her creative talent to her mother, whom she spent part of her adult life caring for, as well as for her two daughters. She found the time to earn her MFA from Cal State Long Beach, and taught at Saddleback College, all while pursuing her own visions.
