The Eye Candy Jewelry Trunk show has taken on a life of its own and has grown into something so much more than just jewelry! We've added ceramics and textile art, too. And, our jewelry list just keeps growing and growing.

Michelene Berkey
Michelene Berkey is flying all the way from Colorado to share her latest delicacies with YOU! Her signature ingredients of silver, gold, semi-precious stones and pearls produce tasty results. For the nature-lover, Michelene's twig rings, pendants and bangles are always a hit. Her popular concoctions of twigs and bees even serves to raise money to help save the bees. How sweet is that? She tells us she has some great new creations.

Joanna Craft
Using elements influenced by the far east, Joanna Craft cooks up baubles of decorative papers and textiles mixed with resin and sterling silver elements. Joanna makes all of her settings herself and even hand-fabricates many of her chains. Also working in mixed metals, Joanna's designs appeal to the contemporary. She has enough ingredients in her lineup to help you create your own custom recipie.

Amy Kekst
Serving up an ecclectic fare of gemstones, crystals, one-of-a-kind vintage elements and chains, Amy Kekst takes the cake! Her line is constantly changing and evolving to ensure she's always at the top of the trends. Her newest morsels feature silver chain mesh and fringe mixed with stones that sparkle and shine.

Konplott
New designer to Chemers Gallery, Miranda Konstantinid of Konplott uses crystals, pearls, glass and metal to create jewelry that is "free of material limitations." Miranda lives and works in Germany and her appetizing goodies can be found in major cities around the world. Influenced by everything from tribal gowns, yoga and even archtecture, Konplott is sure to satisfy your more exotic moments.

Barbara Lanci
Feast your eyes on Barbara Lanci's bold treasures. This talented craftswoman works in fine silver, argentium and unique stones to deliver delectable results. Trained under master jewelers, Barbara continues to challenge herself to come up with dishes tastier than the last.

Mashka
Hailing from San Francisco via Siberia, Mashka favors nuggets of 14k gold, copper, labradorite, black spinel, pyrite and more in her sophisticated creations. She mixes in gold, silver and oxidized silver to make her creations sing. Tailored to suit any palate, Mashka's trinkets are good enough to eat.

Ayala Bar

Angie Olami
Like fine wine, some things only get better with age. That's why the 2,000 year old glass Angie Olami uses in her box of tricks is so divine! Angie Olami stirs in beads and semi-precious stones with her ancient glass and sets her treats in sterling silver. Every piece of glass is a delight to behold.

Maria Counts
San Diego artist Maria Counts uses candy-colored glazes to highten the sweetness of her thought provoking ceramic art. Her vessels, embossed kimonos, teapots and colorful characters are plentiful and are just the right trimming for your shelves, end tables or that special spot in your home or office. Maria's work ranges from whimsy to sophisticated and has continued to intrigue our clients.

Lisa Mertins
A woman of many talents, Lisa Mertins not only whips up intriguing ceramics, she's also a fine artist, jeweler and children's book illustrator! Never fully satisfied working in one single medium, Lisa brews clay, hand-stamped design and asymmetrical shapes to excite the senses. Her whimsical illustrations are part sketch, part monoprint and part watercolor. Come and see what Lisa has for you!

Mary Hammond
Creative designs in mouthwatering colors adorn Mary Hammond's delicately hand-sewn scarves. Created with fabric, thread, ribbon, sequins and trim, Mary's delicious handiwork is the perfect garnish for your tables, walls or that special outfit you need a little something for. Traveling from northern California, Mary is sure to have that certain something to spice up your wardrobe or your home.

Susan Horton
If it's fine woven scarves and shawls you've been craving, have we got a treat for you! Local weaver Susan Horton will be sharing her concoctions and even demonstrating how she cooks up her magical scarves and shawls. Utilizing ingredients of cotton, silk, wool and tencel, Susan's passion for weaving is evident in the fine work she produces.

A sampling from each artist is available online, but don't be fooled into thinking that's all we'll have for the show! Everyone is bringing a trunk-full of surprises and goodies for your enjoyment!

Not only will we be serving up sweet treats for your eyes, we'll also be serving sweet treats for your tummies. Come in to sample our wares and fares.

Yet Another Fantastic Year!

Are you sure it's the end of 2011 already? What a whirlwind of a year! In the continued difficult economic climate, we are ever more appreciative of the blessings in our lives, especially YOU! You know the value in shopping "small," and we are honored that you help to support your local community. It's a no-brainer that more of your money stays within the local economy when you shop small independent businesses like Chemers Gallery, and we'd just like to say that you're doing a great job! Keep it up!

Even though times are tough, we haven't let it get us down. In fact, we've been busier than ever planning tons of events for your pleasure and, oh yes, showing off the ART!

Chemers Gallery welcomed several new artists throughout the year. Painting buddies Dori Dewberry, Julie Hill and Dana Cooper joined our ranks this summer and have been delighting us with their sparkling personalities, beautiful pastels, watercolors and oil scenes. Recent Long Beach State University graduate Ian Paul joined us after showing his contemporary acrylic works at our annual Tustin Art League exhibition. (By the way, Ian not only one an Honorable Mention & the People's Choice Award at the show, but he also won Best of Show at the Bower's Museum & exhibited his work at the Tangata Restaurant!) Anthony Salvo delighted our visual pallets with his yummy dessert paintings. Toward the end of the year we met Linda Reed and her beautiful fused glass mosaic panels. We were also introduced to Susan Horton's beautifully woven textiles this year. She even brought her loom to share how she creates her scarves and shawls.

We also welcomed new work from favorite artists. Mixed media artist Laurie Meseroll sent us several whimsical pieces made with paint, fabric, paper, glitter and even essential oils! We carried her art years ago and Karen was finally able to convince her to send more. Also keeping us stocked with whimsical treasures was Kristina Swarner. Her small prints are simply enchanting.

We say it again and again, but Jim Wodark just keeps getting better and better! As a plein air painter who continuously strives to challenge himself and push his art further, Jim keeps bringing us beautiful landscapes and marina scenes while entering (and winning!) competitions all over the place. In September, Jim was featured in a 5 page article in Plein Air Magazine. We're talking about an upcoming show that will feature a large body of work from this tremendous talent - details TBA!

Carol Jessen sent us urban scenes that were snapped up immediately. At least we had the chance to take pictures of them this time!

Aquamarine Light, pastel by Mary Aslin

We welcomed new pastels from Mary Aslin, new watercolors from Pete Roberts and new oil paintings of local landscapes from John Sawyer. John Baughman visited us all the way from Michigan to show us what new abstract avenues he and his wife, Jan, are exploring in their works on paper. Bonnie Holmes visited us whenever she was in town to show us her latest small oils or the newest creation she was knitting. We are thrilled to have new ceramics from Maria Counts and Itsuko Zenitani, as well as glass light catchers, soap dishes and trays from Leona Hawks. We've also received funky, one of a kind ceramic vessels from Lisa Mertins, who you may remember as the illustrator of Jim Doti's children's book, A Christmas Adventure in Little Italy.

Sadly, we also lost a favorite creative talent this year. Jennie Tomao passed away in May but her memory lives on in the lives she touched through her gracious spirit and beautifully rendered landscapes and still life.

As if all that art wasn't enough, Chemers kept busy with events, shows, demonstrations and lectures!

February was a busy month for us. We kicked off the year with our Eye Candy Jewelry Trunk Show, featuring talented jewelers Michelene Berkey from Colorado, local gal Joanna Craft, Amy Kekst from Ohio, semi-local Barbara Lanci, mother-daughter team Dina & Liz Yesachar and fused glass artist Linda Warwick-Smith. Textile artist Mary Hammond spent the day with us too and showcased her uniquely artistic scarves. A short few days later we hosted "Escape from Sobibor" with Philip Bialowitz, a survivor of the Nazi death camp Sobibor. His lecture on escaping the death camp by joining a prisoner-led revolt was deeply moving and impactful. We rounded out the month with a show of student work from the Laguna College of Art and Design.

In April and May we hosted our 4th annual open exhibition with the Tustin Art League, but this year there was a twist. We also hosted a show simultaneously with the United Society of Pastel Artists. Not only did the exhibitions showcase our talented local artists, they also introduced us to new styles and techniques and gave us a deeper appreciation for the pastel medium.

Throughout the summer, the Enderle Center hosted a monthly summer concert series. Chemers Gallery invited our artists to join in the festivities by bringing their studios to us! While the live music was happening on our doorstep, visitors to the center were treated to an opportunity to watch some of their favorite artists paint, draw and weave. Patrons were able to chat with our artists and ask them questions about their process and technique. We plan on making artist demonstrations a regular thing here at Chemers - stay tuned for details!

Karen continued her lectures for OLLI on the world of children's book illustration. This time she put participants to work creating their own children's book with a team. Look for her upcoming lecture on printmaking techniques for OLLI in 2012.

Of course, who could forget the Big One, the mother of all events, our 20th Annual Children's Book Illustrations Art Show & Book Signing? Featuring the talents of Robin Preiss Glasser, Raul Colon, Elisa Kleven, Mary GrandPre and Steve Johnson & Lou Fancher, this year was definitely the busiest it's ever been! Our returning all-star artists delighted us with whimsical, adorable, sophisticated, stunning and downright BEAUTIFUL book illustration. We had such a hard time choosing what to frame and hang on the walls - it was all so magical! For the first time, Chemers Gallery partnered with Chapman University's College of Educational Studies K-12 Literacy Programs.

One of the biggest changes at Chemers Gallery during 2011 was that long-time staff member, Cathy, moved to Washington state. She and her husband were fulfilling a life-long dream to live in the Pacific Northwest. We hear she's happy and showing her pastels in a local venue, and we wish her nothing but the best!

We are so very thankful for the role we can play in our community and so incredibly grateful to the art lovers that have continued to show their support at Chemers Gallery. We'll see you in 2012!

Just a peek at our biggest show yet! Even after 20 years, we are still floored by the volume of art admirers and book lovers that pass through our doors for our annual Children's Book Illustration Art Show & Book Signing! Saturday's show was probably the busiest it's ever been, and we have you, our valued clientele, talented illustrators and generous volunteers to thank for it. You rock our world!

Robin Preiss Glasser, illustrator extraordinaire of the Fancy Nancy series, has not only released her original Fancy Nancy illustrations for the first time ever, but she's also allowed us - and only us! - to create limited edition prints of her artwork for purchase!! OMG! It’s our 20^th year celebrating Children’s Books and their charming, thought provoking, stimulating, moving, sophisticated, scary, wistful, historical, cute, lavish, old world, creative, just gotta have it ILLUSTRATIONS…

We have been so fortunate to touch so many hearts with the works of over 50 illustrators over the past 20 years. From our clients who buy the books (many for themselves) to the youthful recipients to our beneficiary organizations we are grateful. Some of the organizations we have benefited over the years include Ronald McDonald House, The Wooden Floor (formerly Saint Joseph Ballet), Orangewood, Big Brother Big Sisters, Marconi Foundation for Kids and currently Chapman University College of Educational Studies K-12 Literacy Programs.

To our volunteers helping us to prepare for the event and work the day of the show, we could not do it without you! That includes friends, family, clients, past employees and our beneficiary organization and our great Chapman intern, Ellen… we love you all!

To Jennifer, Robert & Corey (and James), Chemers Gallery stellar staff, you are the best. You made it all come together with our minimal crew. Thank you. We can almost breathe a sigh of relief.

What can I say about my mother, Rita Chemers, who had the original inspiration for this even and Chemers Gallery so many years ago. Thank you for instilling in me the love of art, books & giving back to the community and most of all the opportunity to carry on the traditions you started.

This year… ah, this year… our five returning artists continue to make us smile. And now I have the difficult task of picking my favorites from each, so here goes… in alpha order.

Bowing On Stage, watercolor & pencil by Raul Colon

Our handsome Raul Colon, who comes to visit us every year when he is in California, amazes me with his use of colored pencil. The artwork that leaves me breathless this year has very little color. The piece is from Alicia Alonso Prima Ballerina, written by Carmen T. Bernier-Grand, where Alicia is taking a bow after her performance of Swan Lake at the Metropolitan Opera House. The book is all poetry about this Cuban born dancer and overcoming many forms of adversity. The piece I chose is done solely in shades of yellow and brown to create stunning inner beauty. Raul has very carefully calculated every fine detail. And by the way, our framing job on this work es muy bueno!

Sunday Art Show, pen & ink & watercolor by Robin Preiss Glasser

Robin Preiss Glasser you are an enigma with a huge spirit. I guess my favorite illustration would have to be the Sunday art show from Fancy Nancy Aspiring Artist written by Jane O’Connor. It is all about the ART, after all. This illustration shows Robin’s talent in narrating a story through pictures and the joy of Nancy’s character. For me, this sums up the experience we feel in putting together our illustration show and the fun everyone has who attends the event. I don’t think we could have said it any better!

Lucia in the Woods, pastel by Mary GrandPre

We are so lucky to have Mary Grandpre with us again. Mary has been working in a variety of media recently, but her pastels are still my favorite works. I gasped when I uncovered the protective matting of the cover image from Lucia and the Light, written by Phyllis Root. This piece is magical, from the glowing light in Lucia’s hand to the toes on the trees. The richness of Mary’s pastel is beyond compare. We used the fabulous storybook frame to complete the tale… it couldn’t be more perfect. Sorry, it’s already sold, and unfortunately… not to me.

Leaving the Tree, mixed media by Johnson & Fancher

The ever so clever Lou Fancher and Steve Johnson are so creative in their use of different media and techniques to stimulate imagination. There are so many I love from Bugtown Boogie, written by Warren Hanson, that you could open the book and point to any page and I would love it. But, I think I’ll pick the page toward the end of the book where the bugs are marching out of the tree. The little boy crouches watching them file out. This illustration is a little less colorful, but displays the wonder and curiosity of a little boy. The glow of light coming from the tree makes you want to stay and enjoy just a little while longer.

Over the World, mixed media by Elisa Kleven

Teeny tiny Elisa Kleven’s teeny tiny collage work is crazy. I can’t imagine taking the time to cut all the little tiny people to make the illustrations in her book The Weaver written by Thacher Hurd. I love how the girl in the red dress is flying over the ocean holding her weaving of the world’s wonders. I’m a sucker for anything that has to do with peace for humankind and protection of our environment. This illustration just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Our friend Matthew Cruz was in today and said “This is your favorite show isn’t it?” I had to reply, “Yes, it is.” I guess he could see the glitter in my eyes when I talk about the show. I hope you all come and experience the wonderland created by our extraordinary illustrators on December 3^rd, 2011 from 1-5 pm. If not, you have 2 weeks to view the work in its entirety… We’ll be waiting for you!

Jennifer's Book Picks!

Books books and more books! I love books. I love to read. I love it so much that my house is stuffed with books that overflow into every nook and cranny I can find. That's partly why I love this time of year at Chemers Gallery, when we expand into the world of children's literature. The other part is because I love seeing the original artworks used to create the pages in the stories. There's nothing like viewing the original illustrations and then being able to meet the talented individuals who create those stunning visuals.

But back to the books! Here are just a few of my faves...

Once Upon a Time: Traditional Latin American Tales
Written by Rueben Martinez
Illustrated by Raul Colon

Martina the Cockroach, Watercolor & Pencil

I collect books of folk and fairy tales from around the world, so Rueben Martinez's book Once Upon a Time is a no-brainer for me. Filled with Latin folk tales and beautifully illustrated in Raul Colon's signature style, I can just about hear Rueben's voice as I read the stories. My favorite has to be "Martina the Cockroach," the prettiest roach in town who is wooed by Perez the mouse's soft singing voice. Written in both English and Spanish, this is a great book for an older reader.

Fancy Nancy: Aspiring Artist

Hanging Pictures, Pen & Ink and Watercolor

As an (aspiring) artist myself, I can relate to Fancy Nancy's desire to turn her clubhouse into an art studio to make "gorgeous works of art." In Fancy Nancy: Aspiring Artist, Nancy spends her spring vacation learning about Degas, Monet and Matisse. She even hosts a Jackson Pollock day! At the end of the week she and her friends stage an artist reception for their friends and family. We see Nancy's artistic development progress through Robin's adorable pen & ink and watercolor illustrations and learn Nancy's fancy words like "beret" and "portrait" in her conversational style.

Camille Saint-Saens's The Carnival of the Animals

Tortoise, Mixed Media

Originally The Carnival of the Animals was composed as a musical suite in 1886 by Camille Saint-Saens. He wrote it to describe various animals in musical form, but only allowed it to be preformed twice in his lifetime so as to avoid hurting his reputation as a composer. It's also thought that some of the movements are written as a parody of certain characteristics of his friends (perhaps the Donkeys of the Wild!). It wasn't until the 1940's that a set of verses were written to accompany the music. This particular edition, complete with stunning mixed media illustrations from Mary GrandPre, comes with a CD of the music so you can have the full experience of sound, text and visual art. What a great idea for a musical piece!

For the Love of Music: The Remarkable Story of Maria Anna Mozart

Maria at the Piano, Mixed Media

For the Love of Music really speaks to me because of my years of singing in a choir. The book is broken up into sections headed by musical terminology and is the perfect book for any music lover. It tells the story of Maria Anna Mozart, Wolfgang's older sister. Although she was a musical genius in her own right, Maria lacked the same opportunities her brother had and much of her life is shrouded in mystery. We learn through Johnson & Fancher's magnificent fabric and paint collage illustrations about the close relationship Maria and Wolfgang shared.

Welcome Home, Mouse

In the Store, Mixed Media

Welcome Home, Mouse snuck up on me but it's turned into one of my favorites. Stanley is a very clumsy elephant with an enormous heart. It's not hard to feel for this little guy - all he wants to do is help, but he just can't help knocking over wedding cakes or breaking little mouse houses in the process. When Stanley's mother sends him to the store for more tomatoes, he meets Mouse when he accidentally breaks her humble abode. He feels so bad that he sets about making amends in the sweetest of ways. Elisa's charming illustrations are a perfect match to this adorable story.

Books and original illustrations are available for pre-sale from now until November 26th or until each illustrator has sold 200 books, whichever comes first. Be sure to come in early to pick your books so you don't miss out! You'll still be able to purchase books the day of the show, but we can't guarantee that we'll have all titles available. We'll take care of having your pre-ordered books signed and dedicated by the illustrators. They'll be ready for you at the show on December 3rd, but don't stress if you can't make it that day. You can pick them up any time after the reception at your convenience.

You can meet the illustrators the day of the reception, watch their demonstrations throughout the afternoon, view and purchase their original illustrations. Clients who purchase illustrations will be invited to a private dinner with the illustrators. Click HERE for the lecture schedule.

Raul Colon
2003, 2007
Known for his velvety textures and smooth lines, Raul is back for the 3rd time with a wonderful array of Latin-inspired illustrations. Raul uses a watercolor wash, colored pencils and sharp instruments to scratch into the paper, thus achieving his unique style. A recent collaboration with local bookshop owner Rueben Martinez led to Once Upon a Time: Traditional Latin American Tales. Meet Rueben at our book signing, too!

Robin Preiss Glasser
2006
Working exclusively in pen & ink and watercolor, Robin brings the characters in the Fancy Nancy series into being by using layers of detail and humor. The latest of Fancy Nancy's exploits are featured in Fancy Nancy: Fashion Boutique and Fancy Nancy: Stellar Stargazer. Robin has also collaborated with Lynne Cheney and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, to educate young readers on patriotism and etiquette. For the first time, Robin's original Fancy Nancy illustrations are available to the public! We will also be introducing 5 limited edition prints from the Fancy Nancy books also available for presale.

Mary Grandpre
2000
Although best known for bringing Harry Potter to life, Mary has worked on numerous other children's picture books and chapter books for young adults. Working in a "soft geometry" style, Mary's jewel-toned pastels and mixed media work sing with vibrancy. She brings a strategic problem-solving approach to her illustration work. Mary's latest book, How The Leopard Got His Claws, is an African fable teaching loyalty.

Steve Johnson & Lou Fancher
2003, 2007
Husband and wife team Johnson & Fancher have over 35 books to their credit including Amazing Peace by Maya Angelou and most recently Jim Henson: The Guy Who Played With Puppets. Working in media ranging from collage materials of fabric, paper, acrylic & oil paint to oil & ink on gessoed paper, Steve & Lou's illustrations flawlessly convey the heart and soul of every book they work on.

Elisa Kleven
1993, 2001, 2008
Returning for the fourth time to Chemers Gallery, Elisa's magical illustrations are brought to life through mixed media collages. Her dreamy watercolors are accented with teeny tiny bits of papers, lace and fabric. In addition to illustrating, Elisa also writes many of her charming, whimsical stories. Her latest books include The Friendship Wish and Thacker Hurd's The Weaver.

This year, Chemers Gallery has chosen Chapman University College of Educational Studies K-12 Literacy Programs as the beneficiary for our event. CES provides world class tutoring to K-6 grade students regardless of financial resources and creates custom libraries of books for students to take home. They also provide after school programs in the community and a pathway to bring 1st generation students to the university level.

Although the illustrations reproduced in the books are wonderful, there is nothing like seeing the original illustration in person. Expand your collection or start a collection for someone you love. Don't wait until your favorite is sold - come see them today!

Seeing creative thoughts turned into tangible objects - now that's magic! We're sure you'll agree that the new work we've received from emerging ceramic artist Mark Goudy and gallery favorite Maria Counts is just stunning in its complexity and range of styles.

Tri-Cornered Vessel by Mark Goudy

Mark Goudy was discovered by Karen at a recent show in northern California. The thin, smooth ceramic work he produces just cries out to be touched and turned over with your hands. Mark trained as an engineer and had a 20 year career designing graphics chips in the computer industry. Inspired by his wife and the creative spirit of his late mother, Mark signed up for a raku class and was hooked.

After so many years working in the virtual world, it was refreshing to work with physical materials. He learned the mysterious technique of soluble metal salts and uses the materials to give each piece he creates a modern, graphic quality to its finished surface. Mark's work is unique both in design and technique.

Always With Me by Maria Counts

The serene Maria Counts visited us recently with a box of goodies ranging from clocks to kimonos to her signature face vessels, as well as one of her quirky story-teller figures. Always unique, Maria's ceramics are artfully rendered and evoke the feeling of half-forgotten dreams.

In talking with her, you get the sense that the clay just takes over and before she knows it there is a fully formed piece of art sitting in front of her. Maria's use of hand-building, stamping and glazing achieves stunning results every time.

Summer is winding down, but we certainly aren't! Our last concert in the Enderle Center Summer Concert series is upon us, featuring Celtic tunes with a Bluegrass twist by Sligo Rags, two-time winner of the OC Folk Band Music Award. Get your Irish up and dance a jig or two, it's bound to be a rip-roaring good time! Chemers is extra-jazzed to have the musicians set up right outside our front doors! There will be Italian Ice available with 20% of sales going to Chapman University College of Educational Studies K-12 Literacy Programs, the beneficiaries of this year's Children's Book Illustration Art Show & Book Signing. For the past two shows we've invited some of our local artists to come and demonstrate their talents. We've had pastels done by Mary Aslin and Dori Dewberry, oil paintings by Anthony Salvo, Dana Cooper, Jim Wodark and Kay Flierl, watercolors by Julie Hill and Pete Roberts, acrylics and mixed media by Ian Paul and textile weaving by Susan Horton. We've had such a blast, and the artists have too. How could we resist these wonderful and talented people begging to demonstrate once again? It's been years since we've had work from Laurie Meseroll, but the times, they are a-changin'! She's finally sent us new work! Laurie's work is playful and full of personality. She works on canvas and board with paint, paper, fabric and glitter, and will even embed essential oils into her artwork so they have evocative scents. Her folksy figures can be seen sewing, carrying baskets of eggs, eating soup and playing tug of war. These treasures would be perfect for a niche or placed on a shelf or bookcase.

Maria Counts

Maria Counts has been having fun in her studio! Her recent ceramics are otherworldly Asian-inspired figures. Not quite human and not quite animal, Maria mixes birds, frogs, cat's ears, kimonos and toadstools to achieve truly sophisticated results. If you're a fan of her classic vessels adorned with the faces of women, don't worry, she brought those, too! Always a calming presence in the gallery, Maria imparts her particular ease within her ceramic art.

Influenced by her Siberian heritage at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Mashka creates her elegant, sophisticated jewelry in her studio in northern California. Using fine metals and semi-precious gemstones, her look is timeless, elegant and ever-so-slightly ethnic. Karen found Mashka's work at one of the trade shows where she hunts out new talent. Her muted palette is perfect to wear with evening wear or even jeans and a white top.

Jewelry designer Anna Balkan is the latest addition to our stable of jewelry artists. Karen found her at one of the shows she attends and just fell in love. We know you'll agree, Anna's bold colors and gemstone combinations are simply stunning.

Wrapped Branch Necklace by Anna Balkan

Growing up in Chernobyl, Anna learned at an early age to be resourceful and to inject her grey world with as much coloras possible. She learned to knit and crochet and to make things from whatever was on hand. Later on she joined a Masters of Engineering program where she learned three-dimensional design. Anna immigrated to the US at the age of 20 as a political refugee with practically nothing, including no knowledge of how to speak the language. Through hard work and trust, Anna learned to speak English and returned to school for Economics.

Oxidized Swirl Earrings by Anna Balkan

After the birth of her daughter, Anna decided to leave the career she'd built in the world of project management and follow her childhood passion of jewelry-making. She puts her love of color and texture into every new creation. Her three collections are very distinctive. The Russia collection is colorful and reminiscent of Faberge, Pop Art nods to the marriage of classic vintage and modern styles, while the Simone line focuses on the soothing colors of the Mediterranean. Chains and metal components are all gold, sterling silver or oxidized silver.

Last week we were joined by 7 talented artists and 1 creative jewelry designer for an evening of music, friendship and artwork at Chemers Gallery. As the Margaret Klemm Harp Trio played under the Enderle Center clocktower, Mary Aslin, Dana Cooper, Dori Dewberry, Julie Hill, Pete Roberts, Anthony Salvo and Jim Wodark set up their easels, oil paints, pastel trays and watercolor brushes outside our doors to paint the night away. Joanna Craft brought her eclectic array of jewelry to tempt us with her wearable treats and we indulged in edible sweets. Come celebrate summer with us! Every month on the third Thursday, the Enderle Center will host a free outdoor concert with some of the hippest tunes around. Chemers Gallery will be open until 8pm on concert nights, enjoying the music and, oh yes, watching some of our local painters demonstrate their talents. If you've ever wondered just how Mary Aslin captures the light with her pastels or how Jim Wodark's oil landscapes jump right off the canvas, you won't want to miss these special events.

Jewelry craftswoman Joanna Craft will have a table set up with her mixed metal and resin trinkets. She's been a very popular addition to our jewelry trunk shows in the past.

If you can't make it on Thursday, you're in luck because we're doing it all again in a month!

We won't have any artist demonstrations on August 18th because we'll be rockin' out to Sligo Rags playing their award-winning Celtic music! This time the music will be right at our door, so stop in for some snacks and enjoy the tunes. Sligo Rags won the OC Music Award for Best Folk Band not once, but twice, so you know they're gonna be good!

3 Artists, 3 Distinct Contemporary Landscape Styles

What is it about the changing seasons that makes us want to spruce up our surroundings? Is it the longer days? Is it the warming weather? Whatever it is, we at Chemers Gallery have been itching for new and exciting artwork and WOW, do these three talented artists deliver!

Ian Paul

Temporary Telephone Pole, acrylic paint/ink on board

New kid on the block, Ian Paul, is a recent BFA Illustration graduate from Cal State Long Beach. We flipped over his unique style and use of bold yet opaque colors. His subjects are unexpected and unusual, showcasing the temporary and the industrial landscape. Ian had 2 paintings of Peter's Canyon in our recent "Scenes of Tustin" exhibit with the Tustin Art League, and not only did he win an honorable mention, he also won the People's Choice Award. You may have seen Ian's work at the Tangata Restaurant at the Bower's Museum, the grand prize for the Bowers' 2010 Southern California Representational Invitational Exhibition.

Tina Sotis

The Little Prince, oil on canvas

At last! We have new work from Tina Sotis! Deliciously voyeuristic, these small-scale paintings pack a lot of punch. Characteristically her work suggests solitude and introspectiveness. Most significant are the intimations that the action is either just about to happen or has just occurred. As viewers, we are privy to what feels like a very intimate moment, one we were possibly not meant to see. Tina credits a wide range of influences from movies like Rear Window, Surrealist painters and the black and white photography of greats like Henri Cartier Bresson. Tina's paintings tell a small slice of a story and keep us wanting to know more.

John Maxon

Open Vista, oil on canvas

Oh, how we love John Maxon and his refreshing large-scale canvases. John drove down from northern California with his trusty van full of paintings and we had such a hard time choosing! His work is delightfully colorful and transitional, with just enough detail to hint at a seascape or an aerial landscape. Exposure to artists like Roy DeForest, William T. Wiley and Wayne Thiebaud during his college days gave John the insight to the level of dedication needed to pursue his choice of being an artist. John moonlights an an adjunct professor of art at Cabrillo College in Aptos, where he continues to paint and cultivate joy. We recently learned that he meditates for 2 hours every day - no wonder he's always so calm and collected!

In Fond Memory of Jennie Tomao: Elegance & Grace for All Time

It's with great sadness that we write this blog to tell you of the passing of artist Jennie Tomao earlier this month. Jennie's art career spanned over 50 years and numerous shows and awards. She was born in New York City and attended the prestigious New York School of Music and Art. Rita Chemers started collecting her work during the 1960's and Karen grew up surrounded by the painter's masterpieces. Jennie's work has been a staple in Chemers Gallery for the last 15 years. She will be sorely missed by those of us who were fortunate enough to meet her.

Jennie's work was slow and painstaking in detail. She painted still life, landscapes, life-like flowers arranged in intricate vases, and portraits. Jennie owned every rug, vase and artifact she placed in her artwork; even the flowers often came from her garden. She didn't limit herself to just one style of painting or just one medium. In the olden days, she also produced etchings and works in graphite. Jennie's classical style has earned a loyal following of fans and collectors. We've seen so many people stopped in their tracks by one of her birch forests or Tuscan vistas. Jennie brought her paintings to life with her jewel-like colors and created an inner light with her shadows and highlights.

Jennie was exceedingly humble. She never bragged about her work, always appreciative for how much we and our clients reacted positively to her art. We don't think she knew just how talented she was, although we told her again and again.

The art world has lost a truly talented artist in Jennie Tomao. Our deepest sympathies extend to her family and friends. Jennie, we love you and will miss you.

Don't forget to come support the United Society of Pastel Artists during their reception and demonstration this weekend! USPA's Annual Membership Exhibit and Sale is this Saturday, May 7th, from 5 - 8pm. The show has been up since April 30th and will run through May 14th. Pastel artists Scott Jones and our own Mary Aslin will be demonstrating their talents and the beauty of their crafts. Come one and all to take in the allure of the pastel medium.

Many people think of pastel as a chalk, but don't be fooled! Pastel is actually pure pigment, the same pigments that are mixed with linseed oils to make oil paints. When making a pastel stick, the pigment is ground down to a paste, mixed with very small amount of gum binder and rolled into a stick. Because pastels are indeed pure pigment, they don't fade or change color over time, making them one of the most permanent art mediums. Pastels are applied to a roughened surface in strokes straight from the stick, which embeds the color into the "tooth" of the paper, sandboard or canvas. Artists can either blend the colors together or leave visible strokes, and many favor the pastel medium for it's spontaneity. In other words, you don't have to wait for anything to dry!

All artwork is available to view on our website, but the true depth of color and contrast are best seen in person. Be sure to check out the Tustin Art League's "Scenes of Tustin" exhibit, which is running concurrently. Both shows continue through May 14th.

Chemers Gallery is pleased to be hosting the 4th Annual TAL "Scenes of Tustin" exhibit and USPA's Annual Membership Exhibit and Sale. From April 30th until May 14th, our walls will be peppered with vantages of Tustin in all different media, and a generous dose of pastel art in a variety of subject matter. All artworks are for sale and are available to preview on our website after April 26th.

We're so excited to tell you that Rafael Lopez is a man of many talents and has just celebrated the release of a series of postage stamps created for the United States Postal Service! Each of the 5 stamps commemorates a Latin American musical legend - Tito Puente, Carmen Miranda, Selena, Carlos Gardel and Celia Cruz. If you're familiar with Chemers Gallery's annual Children's Book Illustration Art Show & Book Signing, chances are you will have noticed Rafael's work.His use of bright, bold colors and playful acrylic on wooden panel paintings stood out among our December 2009 show. His illustrations came from books like Our California, My Name is Celia, and the award-winning Book Fiesta.

AND, if that weren't enough, Gibson has created 5 customized Epiphone guitars with Rafael's artwork on them, which will be retired to the Smithsonian museum after they finish their national tour!

Rafael was the perfect choice to create this tribute to the Latin American musical greats. Music has inspired him since his childhood, he can't paint without it. It finds its way into his artwork in the form of winged conga drums, guitars with sacred hearts, musicians blooming from lilies and vocals taking the form of birds in flight.

So put on some salsa, tango or tejano, bust a move or two with a margarita or 4, and then sit down to write a good, old-fashioned letter. Just don't forget the stamp!

Are you ready to submit your masterpieces to our 4th Annual Tustin Art League show? Submission dates are coming up, so get ready! Not a member? Not to worry, the show is open to everyone. Local amateur and professional artists always wow us with their "scenes of Tustin" and every year it just gets better! TAL is a Tustin Area Council for Fine Art (TACFA) program that has been meeting regularly since 2000. Its members actively participate in local events around town like the Tustin Street Fair, Tustin Tiller Days, TAL month at the Tustin Senior Center Gallery, art walks and the annual Promenade Home and Garden Tour.

Exhibition Rules:
Entry must be an outdoor scene from the Tustin area, created during the year since the last contest in May 2010. All mediums are welcome. Entry must be framed to Chemers Gallery specifications and ready to hang. (For details on framing see "Framing Specifications" below.) Artists must fill out an entry form, available at Chemers Gallery, on the Tustin Art League blog, or by calling 714-544-7715. Artists must state category (Amateur or Professional) when entering.

Framing Specifications:
Chemers Gallery will be happy to assist in framing your work; if you choose to frame it yourself, please bring your frame for approval prior to submission. No nicked, gaudy or falling apart frames, please. Oils, acrylics and mixed media can be unframed if gallery wrapped edges are painted. All other two-dimensional work must be framed and ready to hang. Simple frames are preferred, acceptable colors are black & any dark wood. Mats must be neutral white, acid free (like Bainbridge 8655), colored filets ok, and either double 4-ply or single 6 or 8-ply mats. No non-glare glass. Space & weight limits apply. Maria Counts has been one busy lady! We see her when she runs out of clay and makes a trip from San Diego up to Aardvark's in Santa Ana. She never fails to bring us a box of goodies like these extra-special pieces shown here. And, we just couldn't wait to share them with you!

Rabbit Girl by Maria Counts

Ever the "mad scientist," Maria is always experimenting with surprising shapes, textures and forms. She lets the ceramics speak to her and tell her their story, even if she has to wait a while before they whisper their secrets. Rabbit Girl is keeping tight-lipped for the time being, but Maria is sure to crack her code when she's good and ready. You might notice the number around her neck and wonder what that means; well, so does Maria! See if you can spot the tiny word "up" somewhere on her body. Be sure to check out Kimono Boy on our website - he's another one that's keeping mum for the time-being!

Isadora Vessel by Maria Counts

A more typical style of Maria's ceramics is this four-legged Isadora Vessel. Maria beautifully unleashes the face within the clay using glazes, stamps and cut-outs. All four sides are different and work together flawlessly. You might be familiar with Maria's teapots as well. They are all as individual as she is, with no surface left untouched by her creativity.

Join us as we partner with the Laguna College of Art and Design for the first time ever! Chemers Gallery will be hosting a juried show of LCAD student and faculty work from the disciplines of drawing, painting, illustration and sculpture. All works are available for purchase. We're expecting about 70 pieces, from still life to landscape to figurative work.

Located in Laguna Beach, LCAD has been providing tutelage and opening doors in the arts for nearly 50 years. Instructors are well-versed in classical skills and cutting edge modern techniques and build a solid foundation for students of fine art, illustration, graphic design, animation and game art. Small class sizes ensure an education environment geared for success. Creating great art matters as much as the students do at LCAD, and faculty members take great pride in preparing them for a future in the career of their choice.

Love Is In The Air!

We've been getting all gooey-eyed seeing romance everywhere,

and we just have one question for you:

Won't you be our Valentine?

"Love"
Mary Zarbano really gets our hearts going with her vibrant expression of love. This large oil on canvas draws you in with its bold, black curves and bright red center oozing energy.

"First Anniversary"
We're mad for Joyce Lieberman's newest acrylic paintings, especially the sweetly-titled "First Anniversary"! Joyce always delivers work full of joy and emotion. They make us want to dance! Her colors pop and her quirky compositions are endearing. She paints large and small, on both paper and canvas. Joyce is passionate about her work, and makes us want to live in her world of blissful florals and mirthful still life.

"Bride and Groom"
We're simply enchanted with Kristina Swarner's delightful mixed media prints, especially her Chagall-esque bride and groom! This dreamy scene is just so charming and special, perfect for a newly married couple or that landmark anniversary. Kristina participated in our Children's Book Illustration Show in 2009 and we've been nuts over her work ever since. We have lots of little treasures from her, and their small scale makes them even more intimate and tender.

"Love Couple"
We adore these Valentine grandmas by children's book illustrator David Diaz! Painted on handmade paper with a lovely pallet of pinks and reds, David originally created these sweeties for the book "Who's That Baby?" We've got a soft spot for the pair, and the way they're holding hands...AWWW!

"Indirectly Involved"
Dan Allison's romantic-looking photogravure comes with hidden messages. We think you'll be surprised once you figure out his coded text under these beautiful rosebuds! The complicated process of creating a photogravure is definitely a labor of love, and we're taken with the complexity of this image.

"Tropical Heart"
We're sweet on Linda Warwick Smith's whimsical fused glass panels! She uses a mixture of opaque and translucent glass with a little bit of dichroic glass thrown in to add sparkle. Her fanciful heart panel fits perfectly into a stand, so all you have to worry about is finding just the right spot to display it!

Don't forget about our heart-themed jewelry! We have silver open heart necklaces from Michelene Berkey, lampworked glass heart pendants from Joshua Warwick Smith and Swarovski crystal and enamel hearts from Anne Koplik. We also have glass heart paperweights from Canadian artist Robert Held.

And if your sweetie isn't into hearts we have so much more that says "I love you," or "I like you," or "I feel obligated to get you something..."

Linda Smith
This just in! Glass artist Linda Smith will be joining us with her delectable fused glass panels and dichroic glass jewelry. She creates delicious mosaic inspired glass pendants, bracelets and earrings and pairs them with fine silver, Swarovski crystals, Czech glass beads and semi-precious stones. Linda will also be sharing her son's yummy lampworked glass heart necklaces with us. These hearts hang at a jaunty angle from sterling silver chains accented with crystals.

Michelene Berkey
Proving yet again that silver and creativity are two ingredients that produce sweet results, Michelene Berkey joins us all the way from Colorado with her latest treats. Harnessing the textures of nature, Michelene will bring her signature array of twig rings, pendants and bangles. Don't worry if twigs aren't your thing, she also makes adornments out of silver, gold, semi-precious stones, and pearls. Her recent concoction of twigs and bees are just so cute, we can't get enough! She's been creating lots of new looks just for our show, so be sure to check them out!

Local gal Joanna Craft mixes it up with flavors of the east and west. Her decorative papers, textiles and kanji symbols set in resin and silver hit the spot, as do her yummy handmade silver designs. Lately she's been working on a new collection with sterling silver, mixed metals and resin, playing with textures and shapes. Joanna's trinkets can be dressed up or down for a look that's simply enticing. Her jewels are easily customizable to satisfy all tastes.

Amy Kekst
Take a bite of the newest tidbits from Amy Kekst! Forever expanding her horizons, Amy cooks up fun and flirty finery using assorted gemstones, crystals, chains and one-of-a-kind vintage elements. Lately she's been playing with large off-centered focal gems and cascading fringe-like chain. Amy constantly tweaks her recipes to ensure that she's on top of the trends. She's sure to have a few surprises up her sleeve for us!

Barbara Lanci
If it's bold, eye-catching design you're craving, check out Barbara Lanci's show-stoppers! We carried her work a number of years ago before she moved to New York to study jewelry-making. We're so glad she's made her way back to southern California. Barbara continues to study with master jewelers to improve her already amazing skills. She works in fine silver, sterling silver and argentium (this mixture means her pieces don't tarnish-how sweet is that?) and seeks out unique stones to incorporate into her confections.

Dinna & Liz Yesachar

Bringing us timeless, classical styles, Liz Yesachar will be showcasing Dinna's feminine polymer clay, beadwork and Swarovski crystal pieces. Liz and Dinna collaborate from afar and fuse their styles together seamlessly. Scrumptious color combinations, intricate designs and unexpected materials are a signature of this mother-daughter team. Dinna strives to reinvent herself as a designer to develop luscious treasures. From petite rose rings to contemporary beaded Cleopatra collars, Dinna and Liz are sure to have something for every pallet. Don't forget their decorate bowls, vases and more!

Tuck in to the latest delicacies from Israeli artist Ayala Bar. She's sent us a box of goodies for you to savor in her newest colors and designs. Always a crowd pleaser, Ayala Bar's jewels are like tiny wearable mosaics and range from the subtly understated to bold and notice-me big. A big plus...her line is redesigned every six months, so each mouthwatering piece is a limited edition.

Kristina knew she wanted to be an artist since she was a child. She was heavily influenced by her grandmother and her basement stuffed full of children's books. Thanks to Grandma Swarner, Kristina was forced out of the magical basement and into the sunny outdoors. Those early memories of exploring gardens and woods led her to create her heart stopping small wonders today.

As always, Chemers Gallery has had a jam-packed 12 months! It seems like only a short time ago we were awaiting the start of 2010, it's hard to believe it's already at a close. As one of the few independently owned fine art and custom framing stores left in Tustin, California, we are honored that YOU choose us to be your source of R&R in these difficult times! We can't do this without you, fellow art and contemporary craft lovers, so THANK YOU!

Let's re-cap our busy year, shall we? In February we hosted a special reception for artists Mary Aslin and Bonnie Holmes. Mary shared her luminous floral still life pastels, many of which were musically themed. Bonnie brought her peaceful oil on board river scenes. Together, always and ever a gracious pair.

March saw our Eye Candy jewelry trunk show. Jewelry artists Mary-Austin Bame, Michelene Berkey, Joanna Craft, Amy Kekst, and Dinna Yesachar showed off their latest collections of bits and bobs. Ceramicist Maria Counts also joined in the fun with her whimsical and playful teapots, bowls and vases, the perfect accent to all the eye candy around! Ayala Bar and Jackie Jones sent us pick boxes full of goodies that we gleefully displayed and modeled. There's nothing like a show devoted to jewelry to get all the girls together and our favorite man or two! Our 2011 show will be February 12th, get prepared!

For the 3rd year in a row, Chemers Gallery hosted a juried show for the Tustin Art League in May with the theme of "Live and Play in Tustin." TAL members and other local amateur and professional artists were invited to submit their interpretation of the theme and we were rewarded with fresh new views of our fair city of Tustin.

Rita, a font of information, was invited by the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana to give a presentation in August about the art of collecting art. She was a huge success, earning top marks from her peers. We hope she'll give a similar talk here at Chemers!

Pete Roberts shared the beauty and inspiration of Tuscany, Cape May and Orange County in September at an informal wine and cheese reception for his latest watercolors. Pete packed the gallery with friends, family and admirers and regaled us with stories from his travels.

Our own Karen Raab gave her second talk to the local OLLI chapter in November - she's getting quite a following! She discussed the ways non-fiction is addressed in children's literature though illustration.

And, speaking of children's book illustration, who could forget our 19th Annual Children's Book Illustrators Show & Signing earlier this month? With a heavy-hitting lineup of artist greats David Diaz, Julie Paschkis, Patrick O'Brien, S.D. Schindler and Gennady Spirin, this was possibly our busiest show EVER. After pre-selling over 700 books and over 30 pieces of art, we were pooped. We rounded out the year with a special book signing for Dr. James Doti, president of Chapman University, for his very first children's book. Illustrator Lisa Mertins joined in the fun and shared in the biscotti with us.

After all of these events, we are all ready for a nice, long nap!

But, we haven't even touched on all of the new artwork and artists 2010 has seen!

The Deep End by Tina Sotis

Our talented and hard-working aritsts were at it again in 2010, creating stunning masterpieces out of paint, glass, clay and anything else you can think of! Perhaps one of the most exciting shipments to arrive at Chemers this year were two small paintings by Tina Sotis, who took a leave of absense from her studio for a number of years. She's back and is better than ever! James Groleau sent us a trio of European urban river mezzotints. This will probably be the last we see from him for awhile as James has decided to stop his mezzotint process, opting for one-of-a-kind works. His moody scenes will be sadly missed. Another San Francisco-based artist, Carol Jessen, sent some beautiful city scenes our way. We'd love to show them to you, but they flew out of our door before they could even be photographed! Carol, send us more, and quickly!

Country Road by Jim Wodark

We have seen an influx of work from Jim Wodark, a local champ of the plein air scene. He's brought us beautiful mission paintings, serene seascapes, lively city scenes and majestic vistas. Jim's color pallette is shifting into more pure hues that give a brighter feel to his work. Keep 'em comin' Jim! We've also seen new work from Los Angeles-based artist Jennie Tomao. This accomplished painter has been hard at work to bring you gorgeous views of birch tree forests and fields of California poppies. Her series of old world-style landscapes sold out almost immediately, guess she'll just have to get right back to work! The prolific John Sawyer has kept us busy with his paintings of our local hills, canyons and parks.

We've seen John Maxon a few times this year, and his canvases are getting bigger and bigger! John drives all night from northern California just so he can see us first thing in the morning. His contemporary oils are fascinating to look at and masterfully executed. Another contemporary painter who's had a busy year is Kelly Viss. Her soft and dreamy canvases inspire our imaginations. Chemers has continued carrying Kristina Swarner's charming mixed media pieces after the 2009 children's book show. Her little prints are just so sweet, you'll want to snap them up like candy!

Smokin' by Gerald Schwartz

Other new art throughout 2010 included oil paintings by Gerald Schwartz, watercolors from Joseph Stoddard, mixed media canvases from Max Rodriguez, metal art by Karen Musmeci, ceramics by Lilia Venier and Jane Nishii, to name a few. This just in, Bonnie Holmes visited us yesterday with several gorgeous new pieces!

Garden Lyrics 35 by Kay Flierel

Chemers Gallery welcomed several new artists during 2010. Kay Flierel, a local gal, paints beautiful abstract "Garden Lyrics," but she doesn't stop just there! She's also a talented plein air painter. We know how much you love our "spinner rings," so we found even MORE for you! Israeli artist David Tishbi creates delicate sterling silver and gold rings that are stamped with intriguing patterns. We also started carrying jewelry by Laura Cardwell and Jessica & Ian Gibson. Deborah Jarchow joined the Chemers family with her softly woven scarves. We've also added Kenny Smith, a local ceramicist. Kenny joins his wife, Linda Smith, and son, Joshuah Warwick Smith, both artists already showing with Chemers.

Impromptu by Jeff Jamison

Karen vacationed in the Carolinas and in Utah this year, and made some fantastic discoveries along the way. From her trip to the south in the spring, she found jazz artist John Mitchell, who creates mixed media pieces out of paper, paint, wood and metal. She also found Jeff Jamison and was struck by his arresting rainy day city scenes. Textile artist Doris Grieder and jeweler Q Evon also caught Karen's attentions. During her trip to Utah, Karen stumbled upon the copper and molten glass "Spiritiles" of Houston Llew.

Phew! We're exhausted just thinking about it!

Join Chemers Gallery Wednesday, December 8th, as we welcome Dr. James Doti, president of Chapman University and illustrator, Lisa Mertins to celebrate the recent release of their children's book, A Christmas Adventure in Little Italy! For one night only, Dr. Doti and Ms. Mertins will be meeting and greeting their fans and signing their book, which is Dr. Doti's first foray into the world of children's authorship. Based on his memories of visiting his Nonna in Chicago's Little Italy and helping to bake biscotti, this heartwarming tale is sure to bring smiles to readers everywhere.

Lisa Mertins' adorable illustrations are a rich companion to "Little Jimmy's" story. Filled with texture and color, Lisa's artwork seamlessly weaves together with Dr. Doti's verse to capture the magic of childhood.

This event benefits the Kathleen Muth Reading Center, a literacy program developed by Chapman University to aid children in their struggle to read. The program offers one-on-one tutoring sessions and involve the families and teachers of the struggling student so a custom program of learning can be mapped out for the individual. Tutors are MA students at Chapman's College of educational studies and are overseen by leading professionals in the field of literacy.

19th Annual Children's Book Illustrator's Show & Signing

Can you believe a year has gone by since our last children’s book signing and illustration art show? Well, we can because we have been working hard for almost six months to bring you an incredible show! With over 500 illustrations available and over 600 presold books, we are overwhelmed, but undaunted.

I’m sure you’ve been waiting to hear about my faves this year, so here goes, in alpha order…

From the illusive David Diaz, the work from Me, Frida is breathtaking to me. The book is beautifully written as well. These large-scale illustrations are paintings on canvas, representing the lives of artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. The work is slightly reminiscent of Gustav Klimt in his use of color and glazing technique. I could so easily hang one of these pieces in my living room.

Diaz’s work varies widely in technique and style. From silkscreen to mixed media on an interesting array of substrate, his illustrations are at times folk and other times refined.

To the galaxies we travel with Patrick O’Brien. His Captain Raptor series stimulate the imaginations of both big and little kids. I love his space ships travelling through the skies. His use of rich dark colors creates an ominous effect of travel through the stars and planets. I can’t get enough of this piece from Captain Raptor and the Moon Mystery. Patrick’s work, in general, is quite technical and yet very painterly.

I just have to throw in this very adorable piece from A Wasp is not a Bee also by O’Brien. Don’t you just want to take these friendly koalas home with you!

Having recently begun practicing Yoga, I would have to say that Julie Paschkis’s illustrations from Twist speak to me. But, I can’t pick a favorite. Just like any given pose might be a favorite any given day because I need its benefit to my body, I may like different illustrations because they do different things to my psyche on different days. In these illustrations, each pose is shown and set within a descriptive scene showing the translation of the pose. For example, Mountain Pose is set in a landscape with a gently erupting volcano to show both the stillness and strength of the pose.

Much of Paschkis work has a Northern European feel in the folk tradition. The bright vivid colors she uses certainly draw attention!

With over 200 of S.D. Schindler’s illustrations in our possession, choosing a favorite is a difficult task. No trouble choosing my favorite book, The Story of Salt, which tells the historical significance of salt from influencing trade to the curing of meats. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a salt-aholic, but only sea salt!

From his humorous style to the more serious, Schindler’s work is expressive and diverse. I would say this small piece from Three Pebbles and a Song is the most charming. Schindler’s deft usage of watercolor and gouache gives this piece the feel that you could touch the soft moss and climb this lush tree stump mouse house.

Last, but certainly not least, is the work of classically trained Gennady Spirin. My dilemma here was do I select a slightly twisted, scary piece or a simply exquisite piece. Hmmm…. gotta choose twisted.

We don’t have the book, so I can’t verify this character, but I think he is Caliban, the giant malformed beast from The Tempest. I love, love, love this piece. Calibansits on a grassy knoll with strange spirits emanating from the flower above his head while angels float around the knoll. The more you look at this work, the more interesting creatures you find. Spirin’s signature alone is a work of art and the drips on the paper give it life.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! Come choose your favorite on December 4^th2010, 1-5pm. See how easy you think it is, when you look through more than 500 illustrations and over 50 books. Don’t worry, you can come back time and again because the show will be hanging through December 18^th!

If you're like me and love the work of artist Frida Kahlo and the City by the Bay, Me, Frida is a great book for you. Frida and Diego Rivera travel to San Francisco so Diego can work. This is Frida's first time out of her native homeland, and she finds the ways of America strange and intimidating. She is left alone much of the time while Diego is painting, and she soon discovers a love for the city as well as her own artistic voice. David's inspired paintings set the mood for this journey to self discovery.

Cat Face in Tall Grass, Watercolor & Gouache

Patrick O'Brien's books are just oh-so-BOY, but the science-minded girl can get into them, too! Sabertooth explores the physiology and biology of the prehistoric big cats with great illustrations of skeletons, teeth and fur. Packed with fun facts and explanations, Patrick presents a wonderfully readable lesson in prehistoric schooling. Perhaps my favorite thing about this book is the details, like 2 smilodons hiding in the tall grass stalking a mammoth, or even a modern-day paleontologist that looks suspiciously like Patrick!

Glass Slipper, Gold Sandal: A Worldwide Cinderella

I've always loved fairy tales, the weirder the better, so when I saw this version of Cinderella I was delighted! Glass Slipper, Gold Sandal seamlessly combines different versions of the Cinderella story from cultures all over the world. We travel from Mexico to Korea, Iraq to Zimbabwe and further afield as we yearn to go to the king's ball, dance the night away with the prince and foil the stepmother and stepsisters. Julie's magical illustrations were inspired by the traditional textiles of the countries and work together to flawlessly blend one page into another.

This book really got me, from the title to the sweet illustrations. It reminded me of books I had when I was little, and the well-loved stuffed animals that I still have to this day. Poor Doc the teddy bear is thrown out when the children's hospital he lives in has a re-vamp. He finds himself tied to the front of a garbage truck hurtling towards his new home, the city dump. He quickly befriends the rest of the abandoned toys, and that's when his adventures truly begin. Steve's pen and ink and watercolor illustrations tell Doc's story with such charm that your heart can't help but melt.

What a great year for fairy tale books! Russian artist, Gennady Spirin, adapted The Tale of the Firebird from three traditional Russian fairy tales from his childhood. The son of the Tsar must travel from kingdom to kingdom with the help of a magical wolf to retrieve the gifts desired by his father and his father's friends. Gennady's stunning illustrations give the feel of an illuminated manuscript, and his exquisite attention to detail lends a magical feel to every page.

John Maxon - Bigger Than Ever!

John Maxon drove all night from northern California last week just to see us. He packed his car in the dark (man, was it ever packed!) with his newest works to share, left his house at 3am, while we were busy getting our beauty sleep, and was on our doorstep by 10:30 that same day. What a guy!

We had a hard time choosing from so many gorgeous canvases, but we finally narrowed the selection down to 7. These large-scale paintings are bold and imaginative. John masterfully combines shape and form to suggest plateaus, vistas and overlooks. As always, his pallet of colors is vibrant and lively, inviting you to sit and stare. We like-y!

Be on the lookout in the new year for works of John's with birds. We got a sneak peek and they are bee-you-tee-ful! In the meantime, head on over to our website to get an eyeful of the new work.

We've carefully selected 5 award-winning children's book illustrators, and we think you'll agree that this year's lineup is simply amazing! We have over 400 original illustrations in a variety of media to share with you, and we have over 50 wonderful books for you to chose from.

Books and original illustrations are available for pre-sale now until November 27th. Be sure to come in early to pick your books so you don't miss out! You'll still be able to purchase books the day of the show, but we can't guarantee that we'll have all titles available.

We'll take care of having your pre-ordered books signed and dedicated by the illustrators. They'll be ready for you at the show on December 4th, but don't stress if you can't make it that day! You can pick them up any time after the reception at your convenience.

You can meet the illustrators the day of the reception, watch their demonstrations throughout the afternoon, view and purchase their original illustrations. Clients who purchase illustrations will be invited to a private dinner with the illustrators. We have all the artwork now, so come to select your favorite before someone else snaps it up!

David Diaz
Caldecott winning artist David Diaz has been illustrating for over 20 years. As an avid creative since elementary school, David always had the determination and the desire for a career in the arts. Not knowing the term "illustrator," he dubbed himself a "drawer" and has illustrated for newspapers, national publications, corporate clients and children's books. His arresting style is forever changing. Utilizing bold, bright colors and intriguing textures, David weaves a magical tapestry of visual story-telling through his mixed media paintings and silkscreens.

Patrick O'Brien
Patrick O'Brien invigorates his subjects on paper and canvas with a deft skill. His masterful, true-to-life renderings of animals, ships and dinosaurs excite the scientist in us all - he has even been filmed by the History Channel for a documentary about recreating dinosaurs. Pat's background in biology shines through in his watercolor and oil paintings. His awards include the Best of Books by the Chicago Public Library and the Keystone to Reading from the state of Pennsylvania.

Julie Paschkis
Using bold, vivid colors and intricate designs in her stunning illustrations, Julie Paschkis creates charm and whimsy. Her work is reminiscent of scratchboard art, although she works primarily with gouache and ink to create what she calls "open ended stories." Julie studied at Germantown Friends School, Ringerike Folkehogskole in Norway, Cornell University and the School for American Craftsmen at RIT. Her vibrant illustrations have overtones of Scandinavian folk art.

S.D. Schindler
Steven D. Schindler's meticulous illustrations certainly cannot be pigeonholed! Taking his cues from the tone of the book manuscript, Steve's style is as varied as his 100+ books are. He captures the characteristics of every story in his pen and ink, watercolor, pastel and gouache illustrations. Humorous and lighthearted, Steve continuously showcases his balanced vision in his art. He has won the Smithsonian Award for outstanding natural history title, as well as Notable Children's Book from the American Library Association.

Gennady Spirin
Exquisitely detailed and rich in color, Gennady Spirin's illustrations are perfectly suited to the fairy tales and foklore they are paired with. Originally hailing from Russia, Gennady studied at the Surikov School of Fine Art at the Academy of Arts in Moscow and the Moscow Stroganoy Institute of Art. Working in watercolor, Gennady presents magical worlds that echo Renaissance sensibilities. His many awards include the Golden Apple Award and 4 gold medals from the Society of Illustrators.

As always, this event benefits a local children's organization. This year, a portion of proceeds from sales will be donated to the Orange County Ronald McDonald House. They provide housing near medical facilities to families who have children receiving treatments, enabling sick children and their parents the comfort of having one another close by.
